Rats are highly intelligent and social. They form strong bonds with both humans and other rats, and thrive if they have one or more companions of the same gender. Rats can âlaughâ and have distinctive sounds they make when engaging in play with their companions. Rats benefit greatly from toys and other enrichment in their environment, and become bored quickly without new objects or activities to explore. Since they are so smart and engaging with people, rats can be a great low-maintenance alternative to a dog or a cat in a small apartment setting or for families with dog or cat allergies. Rats can live 2-3 years with proper care.
